Java 7 is looking to improve support for dynamic languages using the Java Virtual Machine for their runtime environment. John Rose has been leading a project to explore some options, and JSR 292 will standardise some of this work for Java 7. InfoQ takes a look at the problems JSR 292 solves, and talks to JRuby lead Charles Nutter to find out more about InvokeDynamic in practice.

Virtual Box 3.2.0 Beta 1 supports OS X as a virtualized OS | Macgasm

In the release notes of the latest beta of Virtual Box, the folks over at Sun Microsystems have stated that they have implemented experimental support for Mac OS X as a guest operating system on Apple hardware.

video online: Apple Didn't Kill Flash, HTML5 Did

The problem for Flash isn't that it can't adapt to contain other types of video; it is that software and hardware, particularly on the mobile side, have moved in a direction that natively supports the playback of H.264 content. Why bother using a container if you can play the file natively and get the memory advantages of not having a container plus hardware optimization?

Even on devices that support Flash Lite, the video experience is almost always optimized for H.264. HTML5 just makes the process easier to integrate across multiple platforms. While the proprietary and licensed nature of H.264 has turned some browser makers away from supporting H.264 in the HTML5 video standard (Mozilla and Opera are the most vocal opponents), mobile devices that already have it licensed by hardware vendors are going to use the technology. The quality, player experience and even live stream and ad insertion abilities of HTML5 are expanding all the time as well.

Look at the Sublime Player demo from Jilion for a great example of what can be done with HTML5 and web video. SublimeVideo is working on a solution that will serve HTML5 video by default in mobile browsers, Safari, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer 9, and serve Flash video by default in browsers such as Firefox and Opera.

The fact that so many web video providers are working to embrace HTML5 isn't because Apple doesn't support Flash, but because it is the best way to deliver video to all smartphone users. With or without Apple, the shift to native playback is where web video is headed.

Java: Dynamic Language Support on the Java Virtual Machine

If you said that the JVM is a program that executes Java programs translated into machine-independent bytecode, your statement would be correct but incomplete. The JVM does execute Java programs translated into bytecode, but it is not limited to handling translated Java programs. Increasingly, JVM implementations of dynamic languages are becoming available. These include JRuby, an implementation of the Ruby programming language; Jython, an implementation of the Python programming language; the Groovy scripting language; and Rhino, an implementation of JavaScript.

A $90 Fee (Fine?) for Non-ODF Compliant Office Users, and Now the Sky is Falling?

As soon as the press release came across the wire about this new little fee, you could hear all of the "Chicken Littles" out there clearing their throats so they could start screaming that the sky was falling, and that in no time, OpenSolaris or some other Oracle product was going to be pay-for-use as well. (Where have we heard that cry before?)

Anyways, the sky is not falling. Should Microsoft users be punished by a $90 fine that must be paid due to the fact that their proprietary product doesn't support ODF? Of course they should. And if Oracle makes some money punishing the Microsoft Office crowd, and making them aware of the closed practices of the software maker, then it shouldn't be seen as a bad thing.

Track+: Your Open Source Issue Tracking System

Track+ has now published a fully featured issue tracker that provides customizable fields, WYSIWYG design of input masks with an AJAX based drag and drop editor, rich text descriptions, hierarchical issues, a workflow engine, template based reporting, configurable e-mail reporting, and rich text editing of descriptions and comments to the open source community.

The open source version of Track+ is based on the commercially supported version which adds additional features for reporting and project management.

Cliff Click, Jr. Comapares Directly Executed Bytecode with JIT on a RISC Chip

Last week we managed to get a quick comment from Cliff Click, Jr. about some of the configurations he's been working on over at Azul Systems. However, this week, Cliff has managed to take a bit more time out of his busy schedule to dedicate a full discussion of the concerns many of TheServerSide.com readers were bandying about.

"Just so's you know - it takes a lot more than a casual question about "where's my Java Optimized Hardware" to make me irate.  In fact, that's a very good question - because the answer is not obvious (ok, it was obvious to me 15 years ago, but I was already both a serious compiler geek and an embedded systems guy then).  But it's not-obvious enough that quit a few million $$$ have been spent trying to make a go of it."
